1/8 Acre LAWN-to-GARDEN CONVERSION: Part 2 — Ep. 261
Ever since finishing the renovation of the Meadow House-it's been my dream to overhaul the "backyard" lawn and turn it into a gorgeous garden. The lawn area is around 1/8-acre, which I think many people with small plots can visualize. It'll be our attempt over the next two years or so to take out much of the lawn and convert it to garden space. We imagine this will be a series of a half dozen or so videos documenting the process-and we've already gotten started-though we're at the beginning. Here's part 2 to our original video, which can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/2Rd2HsSPoew/v-deo.html

Tour Our PERMACULTURE ORCHARD - Ep. 260
Переглядів 11 тис.День тому
It's been two years since we've created these orchard berms and started to plant some of the orchard. Yes, I know-quite some time-but the last couple years were challenging with spongy moth outbreaks, a drought, and a late frost, but this year the orchard really has a lot of life (and fruit!). Let's take a full tour-and see the surprises it brings! Special thanks to @EspomaOrganic for being our...
Refreshing COTTAGE PLANTERS with PERENNIALS at the Meadow House - Ep. 259

Sander's parents are staying down in the Meadow House for a couple weeks and one of the projects we hadn't finished before they arrived were the planters. We'll get to some of those now-even though we haven't gotten through all of them. But this time they'll be getting some cool new perennials. Special thanks to our partners @EspomaOrganic for sponsoring this video as well! Join this channel to...

40 Plants for a DIVERSE, LOW MAINTENANCE SHADE GARDEN- Ep. 257
Переглядів 14 тис.21 день тому
We suppose there are many ways to create a "low maintenance garden"-but the one we prefer is a highly diverse garden with close plantings, which pretty much eliminates weeding any unwanted plants. We'll take you through the first garden we put in here at Flock-the Shade Garden, which began 3 years ago and has flushed out to be a really full-of-life garden for the shade. In this video we highlig...
5000-Acre REGENERATIVE FARM Revives Old Farming Town - Ep. 256
Переглядів 88 тис.21 день тому
Fourth-generation farmer, Will Harris from @WhiteOakPastures in Bluffton, GA charted his own course in town when he decided to farm regeneratively-managing thousands of acres rotationally grazing cows, pigs, goats, sheep, and chicken for market in the US. He has been one of the more modern-day pioneers of grass-fed beef and related products, and has served as an inspiration for many others look...
Designing and Planting a STUMPERY Garden - Ep. 255
Переглядів 14 тис.Місяць тому
We were wondering what we could do with the opening driveway, which borders our wild wooded edge and is outside the deer fence, so we figured we'd keep it rather wild and make a stumpery garden of sorts. Not only that-but we found a much more "natural" stumpery in another section of the land, which will eventually get included within the deer fence-making more native plantings possible. Special...
FRUITING & FLOWERING TREES in the Meadow - Ep. 254
Переглядів 12 тис.Місяць тому
We're slowly getting around to more landscape projects and as we finally get to enjoy the newly renovated front porch of the Meadow House, we thought it would make sense to plant some beautiful fruiting and flowering trees for some visual interest and wildlife potential in the meadow area. TROPICAL BULBS I Love for the GARDEN - Ep. 253
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
When you're in Zone 5/6, sometimes you like to have more exotic flowers in the garden-even if they all won't perennialize (ahem...meaning they die in a wintry freeze unless you lift them). I picked seven bulbs/corms/rhizomes that I find myself planting year over year in the gardens and absolutely love their look within the space. Planting A WILDLIFE-FRIENDLY PRIVACY Fence - Ep. 251
Переглядів 14 тис.Місяць тому
Now that we have a new front deer fence and gates on the homestead, we can start planting on the fence line, which we have been looking forward to. Our main goal is not to create total privacy-but a wildlife-friendly fence line, which will also provide some beauty and great visual interest. A key focus was including vines that serve as the host plant for many of our native butterflies and moths...

haaaaaaaaaaa....I tried developing such an ECOcommunity in SW FL, USA in '91. 30-acres/16-lots on the Caloosahatchee River. CalusaWoods, a Place for Plants & People. Sadly, the so-called "greens" hereabouts did NOT buy the very-low cost lots!!! ughhhh... Instead, they were all bought by "conservative Republicans" (haaa), and the whole idea...died. Sighhhh.... Moral: Sometimes, one can build it, and "they" will NOT come! dang it. With luck, I'll try again, or help co-develop another such ECO-community somewhere!! I'm originally from N. Italia*, and living "cooperatively" is like breathin air :-))) buona fortuna~~ (however, 6/2024 is NOT 1991, and it seems that most ECOfolks wanting to do this now, simply don't have the $$$ to become part of creating such a community. Course...I've been wrong before!) *il Comune di Pavia

You will notice over time one species will thrive one year, and next not so much. I recall one summer I could sit outside and hear four or five different Robins singing from different areas of the property. Also, remember to mow some areas for the Robins and others to forage.

Y only 1 of each?... More interest in design using multiples of a plant family near each other, than only 1 lonely plant here and there. Or is this a botanical type experiment? Planting edibles for humane consumption is most important as well as 4 the pollution. Ann, Florida

For so many plants, it is said: First year sleeps, 2nd year creeps, 3rd year leaps. It’s so hard to wait, but you have planted tons and all will grow. you both have done so much to your property. All the hardscape and renovations, all the trees and plants…it will be beautiful and get more beautiful each year. Bravo.

I'm so excited to watch the progression of this new garden area. Beautiful selection of plants! You forgot to mention fragrance as another dimension of experiencing the garden (not a criticism). You have already included several plants that will delight your olfactory senses: peonies, roses, and the actaea. I grow the Itoh peony 'Bartzella'. Soft buttery yellow and a wonderful fragrance. Your editing, narration and quality of your videos are stellar! ♥♥♥ Thank you for the pleasure you both provide. I am a very early subscriber (when you only had a few hundred subscribers). I recommend your channel to anyone who loves to garden!.
